The Golfer's Guide to Hip Mobility, Why Your Hips Are Costing You Strokes
If you're a golfer dealing with a limited backswing, lower back tightness after a round, or a swing that feels more restricted every year, your hips are likely the culprit. Hip mobility is one of the most overlooked aspects of golf performance, and improving it can add distance, reduce injury risk, and make the game feel effortless again.
Why Hip Mobility Matters in Golf The golf swing is a rotational movement. Power is generated from the ground up — through your feet, ankles, knees, and most critically, your hips. When your hips can't rotate freely, your body compensates. Usually that compensation happens in your lower back, which absorbs the rotational stress your hips should be handling. Over time this leads to tightness, pain, and a swing that plateaus no matter how much you practice.
Signs Your Hip Mobility Is Limiting Your Game
You feel tightness or restriction at the top of your backswing
Your lower back aches during or after a round
You've been told your swing is "too arms-y" or lacks rotation
You feel more stiff on the back nine than the front
Three Movements Every Golfer Should Do
1. 90/90 Hip Stretch Sit on the floor with both legs bent at 90 degrees, one in front, one to the side. Sit tall and hold for 60 seconds each side. This targets internal and external hip rotation simultaneously.
2. Hip Airplane Standing on one leg, hinge forward at the hip while rotating your pelvis toward the ceiling. This builds single-leg stability and hip control, critical for the follow-through phase of your swing.
3. Deep Squat Hold Hold a deep squat for 30–60 seconds daily. This opens the hip flexors, groin, and posterior chain, all areas that tighten up from sitting and restrict your rotation on the course.
When to See a Physical Therapist If these movements feel impossible or painful, that's a signal your body needs more than a stretching routine. A physical therapist can assess your specific movement pattern, identify where the restriction is coming from, and build a plan to restore your full range of motion, and your full swing.
